Non Co-Operation Movement

The Leaders of khilafat movement in India , Shaukat Ali and Muhammad Ali secured the help of Gandhiji for the movement. They also joined the Non CO-OPERATION movement and campaigned for Hindu -- Muslim unity. Many patriotic Indians returned the titles conferred on them. Advocates gave up their practice and joined the movement Thousands of students came out of government schools and colleges and National institutions were started. When elections were held according to the Reforms of 1919 A.D the Congress boycotted the elections. In Chauri Chaura , the police fired upon the procession of the people. Enraged by this , the people burnt the police station which caused the death of 22 Policemen. Gandhiji , Pained by the violence , called off the Movement

Leaders like Chittaranjan Das and Motilal Nehru were unhappy over the withdrawal of the movement. They Started the Swaraj Party in 1922 A.D and by contesting elections, they oppossed the government from within the legislature. To console the agitating Indians and to consider further constitutional reforms , the British Government appointed the Simon Commission in 1922 A.D. As well the members of the commission were Englishmen, it was strong protest demonstrations all over the country during the Commission's Visit. Lala Lajpat Rai died in the police Lathi Charge

The British countered the protest by challenging the the Indians come up with an alternative proposal. The Congress accepted the challenge and appointed a committee headed by Motilal Nehru to draft a report in 1928 A.D . The Nehru Committee recommended complete independence. The report was ignored by the government . The Congress at its Lahore session in 1929 A.D . which was presided over by Jawaharhal Nehru , declared , Poorna Swaraj (Complete independence") as its goal. It announced the celebration of January 26 ,1930 as the independance Day . The Lahore Congress authorized Mahatma Gandhi to lead the Civil Disobedience movement with Salt Sathyagraha
